Dental Assistant Job Description:
Dental assistants provide different types of patient care, office duties, and laboratory duties. They do not perform the same tasks that dental hygienists are licensed to perform. Job duties of a Dental Assistant may include, but not limited to the following examples:

·         Make patients as comfortable as possible in the dental chair, prepare them for treatment, and obtain dental records.

·         Hand instruments and materials to dentists, and keep patients' mouths dry and clear by using suction or other devices.

·          Sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment, prepare tray setups for dental procedures, and instruct patients on postoperative and general oral health care.

·         Sometimes prepare materials for making impressions and restorations, expose radiographs, and process dental x-ray film as directed by a dentist.

·         Sometimes remove sutures, apply anesthetics to gums or cavity-preventive agents to teeth, remove excess cement used in the filling process, and place rubber dams on the teeth to isolate them for individual treatments.

·         Make casts of the teeth and mouth from impressions.

·         Clean and polish removable appliances.

·         Make temporary crowns

Dental Hygienist Job Description:
Dental hygienists provide preventative dental care and teach patients how to maintain good oral health and generally work under the supervision of a dentist. Job duties of a Dental Hygienist may include, but not limited to the following examples:

·         Perform dental cleanings, removing hard and soft deposits on teeth.

·         Examine teeth and gums, noting whether signs of disease or abnormalities are present (they are not allowed to diagnose disease).

·         Perform some aspects of periodontal therapy.

·         Apply fluoride treatments or sealants to teeth.

·         Take and develop x-rays.

·         Prepare diagnostic tests to be administered by dentists.

·         Assist the dentist by working chairside.

·         Administer anesthetics. (In some states)

·         Remove sutures.

·         Apply filling materials, temporary fillings, and periodontal dressings.

·         Smooth and polish metal restorations.
